Rüsselsheim/Turin.  Starting in August, the Opel Insignia is lowering its ecological footprint, but raises the bar in looks and drive-ability.

With reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption on most of its powertrains, the Opel Insignia brings even greater efficiency and cost savings to the mid-sized class without losing any of the performance fun. Engine improvements also include smoother diesel engines. And, for the first time, Opel will combine a diesel engine with its sophisticated Adaptive 4x4 system. At the same time, the Insignia is now offered in a Dark Mahogany exterior color and two new looks.

A raft of technological changes have resulted in a 5 percent reduction in CO2 emissions, placing the Opel Insignia ecoFLEX (96 kW/130 hp and 118 kW/160 hp) at 129 g/100 km, or 4.9 l/100 km combined, allowing maximum tax benefits for many European countries. The ecoFLEX version of the Sports Tourer will boast eco-credentials of 134 g/km CO2 or 5.1 l/100 km. Both ecoFLEX variants still manage to achieve a remarkable performance of 118 kW/160 hp and up to 380 Nm torque (with overboost).

New for this model year are refinements made on all diesel engines to improve the noise and vibrations to keep the interior quiet and thus enhance the comfort of interior acoustics. The changes target betterment in both mechanical and combustion noise. These changes were made on the 110-, 130- and 160 hp variants.

In addition, the 2.0 110 hp and 130 hp now have a smaller turbocharger for good response and improved fuel efficiency, right-sized to meet the needs of lower output variants. Cylinder head and injectors were also completely re-engineered to reduce exhaust back pressure and improving air mass throughput and combustion.

On the gasoline side, the 2.0 Turbo 162 kW/220 hp now is fitted with improved engine management system controllers developed by Opel engineers, along with some fine-tuning of its engine management unit, which allowed for up to 11 percent reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

To make economic driving easier, a shift-up indicator will now be standard on all Insignia models starting in August.

Adaptive 4x4 now combined with a diesel engine

Sales analyses show that 45 percent of Opel customers Europe-wide who order the 2.0 liter gasoline turbo add the optional Adaptive 4x4 to their Insignias. Due to that high demand, the Opel Insignia sedans and Sports Tourer now couples the intelligent 4x4 with the 2-liter turbo diesel with 118 kW/160 hp. This new variant will be available starting this fall.

In this way, Opel drivers can get the benefits of the great stability, traction and handling of the Adaptive 4x4 as well as the economy and driving characteristics of a diesel.

Insignia keeps up with latest fashion trends

In addition to the improvements in powertrain, the Opel designers are keeping the Insignia’s fashionable look up to date, with a new warm, Dark Mahogany exterior color. Owners may couple that with the new premium leather in the color “Indian Summer” for an upscale, contemporary look.

This contemporary leather interior in an upscale cognac-type color is a clear fashion statement. Several different stitching techniques – contrasting piping and stitching with a soft, cashmere color – were used in this trim not only on the seats but also on the door inserts, the steering wheel as well as the gear shifter. The Insignia signature blade is stitched in the seat and floor mats. The black interior provides full leather trim for a luxurious feel. This trim is completed by the OPC-Line Interior Pack that includes a sporty leather steering wheel and gear shift lever and aluminum pedals and dark headliner.

For a sporty feel, Opel is now adding a Sport Edition Pack, which comes with a jet black interior. The Sport Edition Pack, also comes with the OPC-Line Interior and Exterior packs that includes a sporty leather steering wheel and gear shifter, aluminum pedals and dark headliner. On the exterior, lower front and rear bumpers, wider side sills, and 19-inch or 20-inch alloys are included. The Sport Edition Pack is offered in the Cosmo and Sport trim levels.
