Rüsselsheim. At today’s all-employee meeting at the Opel headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Opel/Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly and Works Council Chairman Klaus Franz underscored their common ground of the company’s future.
“Management and the Works Council are united in the goal of making Opel/Vauxhall a successful company again – one with stronger autonomy that will play an important role inside GM,” Reilly said as he summarized the large morning event with more than 9,000 employees. “We are following a clear plan for the future which will provide long-term prospects for our employees.”
He added that the restructuring ahead is a necessary step along the path of a profitable future. “Naturally the topic of job reductions weighs heavily for every employee, and it is our goal to resolve this subject quickly and reach an agreement with worker representatives. The plan, however, goes far beyond capacity reduction and includes many elements necessary for sustainable growth: Our company has a vision for a dynamic product portfolio, future technologies and investment.”
Reilly promised employees that he would openly and honestly inform them about the restructuring. The first details have been presented and the next step is to work with the works council to come to an agreement.
Reilly confirmed to the employees that he intended to present a detailed plan by the middle of this month. Only with a fast implementation can Opel confidently prepare for the difficult year 2010 expected for the automobile industry. “With our exceptional new vehicles like the Insignia, Astra as well as the new Meriva which will launch next year, we have a sound foundation to build on”, Reilly added.
