Rüsselsheim. Opel is strengthening its communications department: from October 1, Bernd Abel (41) will lead the Rüsselsheim automaker’s product communications. This also comprises technology, design, motorsport, classic and lifestyle communications. Abel takes over this position from Harald Hamprecht (40), who has been responsible for the company’s product and corporate communications since May 2012. Hamprecht is named Vice President of Communications Johan Willems’ (55) deputy, and in addition to corporate communications also takes over the Social Media and TV/radio departments. Hamprecht and Abel report to Willems.
“We are in the midst of the largest model offensive in our history – with 27 new models from 2014 to 2018. We are delighted to welcome an experienced product communicator and industry expert on board with Bernd Abel,” says Johan Willems. Abel was manager of product communications at Czech automaker Skoda in Mlada Boleslav for three and a half years, and prior to that held various positions in corporate communications at the BMW Group in Munich for 14 years. He also has experience in the political arena and has held executive positions at PR and event agencies both in Germany and abroad.
“Harald Hamprecht hands over an extremely healthy and well-positioned department to Bernd Abel,” says Willems. “His work in product communications has been outstanding. In his new position, Harald will further advance the networking of internal and external topics. He will also expand the social media and TV/radio departments and set new priorities,” continues Willems. Before joining Opel, Hamprecht worked as a journalist for eleven years, most recently as editor-in-chief of the trade journal Automotive News Europe, as senior reporter at auto motor und sport as well as editorial manager of the four online auto portals of Motor Presse Stuttgart. Prior to that, Hamprecht, who holds a business administration degree, was a reporter at the trade magazine Automobilwoche and an editor at the investor magazine TeleBoerse, which belongs to the Handelsblatt publishing group.
